Thomas Leiper Kane papers, 1846-1883.

Papers cover primarily Kane's two trips west, in 1846-1847 and in 1858. The collection contains letters, diaries, agreements, clippings, notes for articles and lectures, drafts, sketches, and diagrams. Predominant subject matter is the Mormons, their history, migrations, persecution, and characteristics. Descriptions of travel across the Isthmus of Panama and between San Bernadino, Calif. and Salt Lake City, Utah are also found in the collection.

Alfred Cumming was born in 1802 in Augusta, Georgia. As Mayor of the city of Augusta, he achieved prominence by his active work in curbing a yellow fever epidemic. John Milton Bernhisel III (1878-1957) was born in Lewiston, Utah. In 1908-1910 he served as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints in Liverpool, England.
